Summers Day

Once I was caught inside
On a warm and sunny day
I sure hate, being stuck inside
when the weather gets that way

The grass was growing
and the birds were out
Hopping and chirping
And twittering about

The sun was shining
on leaves of green
A warm wind blew
through the front door screen

I sat at my desk
Book open wide
5 more problems left to do
'Fore I could go outside

Staring through the window
My eyes went out to play
How I wished that I could follow
On that warm and sunny day

How I wish I could be outside
Running through the grass
Instead of being stuck in here
Doing homework for my class

If I were outside over the hills I'd run
And down to the babbling brook
and off to the side in a quiet pool
At my reflection I would look

Then over the stream and into the woods
Where sunlight played in the trees
With the honey smell and busy buzz
of the ever working bees

When I'd try to get some honey
From the busy buzzing hive
The hive, it'd jump and jerk and bounce
as though it were alive

The bees they'd chase me down
Like a mob of angry men
I'd run as though I couldn't stop
'Till I reached a shady glen

The bees were gone, I'd be alone
In the glen of shady shadows
I looked around for a shady spot
When a fragrance graced my nose

Then I'd lay down, among the blooms
of the flowers that grew there
I'd rest and nap and maybe dream
Of my lady fair

Finally when rested
I'd up and off, away
To gallivant through the woods
And enjoy the sunny day

But there I was, caught inside
My book still in front of me
I bowed my head in dispair
With so much work I'd never be

Able to go outside
and run and jump and play
I sighed to myself and resigned myself
To a wasted summers day
