The Mathematics of Sadness
And this is the mathematics of sadness
1 grinning gunman too lonely to care
2 dreaming children who will never wake up
4 grieving parents whose innocence and children
have been taken by a kid with a handful of death
A community torn, unsafe and unsure
of where to turn and who to trust
A bleeding nation that sighs and turns its head again
and dreams a giant's dream of peaceful nights and happy houses
For me, my world is falling down
it has been suddenly broken
fractured by 15 bullets I never saw
There is a Sadness now
spoken of only in whispers
we are not supposed to know its name
but we have seen its face
and we cannot forget that it is here
It has wrapped itself about us like some second skin that we cannot remove
it is closer than bullets
and closer than bones
Let us weep now and remember
let us mourn and know our loss
let us cry but carry on
for there is work still to be done
In our homes and in our houses there are children to be loved
families to be rebuilt
and a town to be restored
Let us weep now and remember
keep these memories alive
let us go and love our families
and keep our children by our side
