Coyote is Calling

Coyote is calling
I think he wants me to tell his story
I can see his footsteps in the snow outside my window
I can hear his voice between the wind, circling the house
crying to be let in

From beyond the small light of my electric fire
there are two eyes watching me
waiting for me to pick up my pen and scratch out his words
I know that you are waiting Coyote
(you have never been patient)
but now is not our time

Soon Old Man, I promise
soon we will be lovers and brothers
enemies and heroes
we will meet under the moon
and you will you tell me all your stories
and I will make you a legend once again

But not tonight

Tonight is for darkness and for sleep
for snowflakes and falling stars
for stories and laughter
for quiet and night and dreams as thick as berry-juice
