A Desert Beyond the Trees

The light is growing quickly, and the shadows can't be seen
I am coming to a new place now

Ducking my head from the last leaves of the dark and tangled trees
it is a white sun and white sand that stretches before me
welcoming me with dry but open hands
there is peace here but no horizon
the dunes run on to forever
as far as I can dream

But

Beyond the terror and beyond the pain
beyond the thirst and the white whispering voice of the wind
between the sand and the sky
between the heat, and the hate, and my cracked and bleeding skin
there will be salvation
there will be an end
there will be the mountains beyond this desert beyond the trees
and as I step sadly into the sand, I wonder
with wide eyes and heavy heart
what it is I'll find waiting there for me
