Snake
Her eyes flashed like diamonds in the dark,
and she moved like a snake,
weaving through the clumsy bodies that surrounded her
as if they were no more than leaves of grass.
As the bass thundered against me,
its thick fists pummeling my frail frame,
and the strobe lights poked holes in my vision
with dull but insistent fingers
I closed my eyes and imagined meeting her gaze across the room,
her emeralds-for-eyes freezing me where I stood
helpless among the dance,
no more than a mouse before a cobra.
My fantasy complete, I opened my eyes, but she was already gone.
Slithered silently away, soundless as a snake in the grass.
