Berkeley
A Promise to Maren

That city is built
upon rubbish and rain,
with roads made for feet
and not wheels.

That place runs together
like the leftover pieces
of three different,
unfinished puzzles.

Those people are strange
and unkempt as the city,
a veritable Salvation Army.
Armed to the teeth
with various smells,
and fiery hard-won opinions.

But I know a girl,
a woman in fact,
who endures, nay, enjoys it all.
So, just one more time,
I think I'll go back
to the ugly and gritty,
to the real, and the rude.
